Functioning Mathematically Annual Conference Friday 25th June Opening Speaker Dr Bob Anderssen (BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD) Senior Principal Mathematician CSIRO Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics
Bob Anderssen is a highly respected CSIRO mathematician. He specialises in mathematical modelling to solve challenging problems in image recovery and reconstruction, rheology (the science of flow and deformation) and biology.
He has work on the mathematical modelling of a variety of real-world applications such as electromagnetic induction in the Earth, global seismology and seismic tomography, vibrating piano strings, wheat-flour dough rheology (the science of flow and deformation), and the analysis of NIR spectroscopic data. The current focus of his research activities include pattern formation in plants, the rheology of cereal grain hardness, antiviral resistance in plants and the genetics of geometry.
Earlier research which had an interesting Australian aspect included
· proving mathematically that the sound produced by the Stuart & Sons piano (manufactured in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, by Piano Australia) is harmoniously different to that of traditional concert grand pianos, and
· modelling the mixing, on a Mixograph, of wheat-flour dough in the recovery of information about the flow and deformation occurring as a function of its molecular composition.
As well as his professional research interests, he has also taken a keen interest in the marketing of the “role and importance of mathematics in applications” to the wider community. Over the years, this has involved giving talks and presentations, organizing seminars on “the impact of applications on mathematics”, writing popular articles and contributing to various CSIRO initiatives such as the Student Research Scheme.
As the consultant mathematician for Maths by Email and as a participant in Mathematicians in Schools, he is actively involved in promoting interesting and useful mathematics to school students and the wider community.
A summary of his attitude towards the “role and importance of mathematics in applications” is contained in the article “It is the perception that counts, not the reality!”, AustMS Gazette 35 (2008), 290-305.
